About
FEATURING: Tony Saunders - son of Merl Saunders (of Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders Band) Scott Guberman (of Phil Lesh and Friends) Larry Vann (of Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders Band) Stephanie Hartwell Mandella (of JGB) The Story: Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders met in the late 60’s through an introduction by Nick Gravinites and Paul Butterfield. They would play together for decades in various groups and made the iconic "Live at Keystone" record in 1972. Jerry and Merl played first at The Matrix in San Francisco and then started a relationship that had them playing at The Keystone in Berkeley, CA, and all over the states. The group featured Tom Fogerty on guitar, Bill Vitt on drums, and John Kahn on bass. They toured together for about 5 years, first called "Merl/Jerry Band," then "Reconstruction," and finally "Legion of Mary." The relationship with Jerry lasted forever as they later worked on the CBS TV show "The Twilight Zone" together, and when Jerry had his diabetic coma, he went to Merl to regain his playing strengths. Tony Saunders, Merl's son, began playing bass at 14 years old and watched John Kahn and several great bass players play. Tony first got to play with Jerry and his dad when he was 17 years old, getting to sit in on the last songs of the night and then subbing for John a few times. Tony also played on all "The Twilight Zone" episodes when he was playing with other people. So, Tony knows every song Jerry and Merl played at Keystone, and thus, the name "Keystone Revisited" was born. Tony was lucky enough to be in the right circle of musicians as he has played with rock legends David Crosby, Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Bob Weir, Vince Welnick, Brent Myland, Buffy St. Marie, jazz legends Joe Sample, Esther Phillips, and Stevie Wonder, and gospel icons The Hawkins Family, Shirley Ceasar, and Andre Crouch. He grew up under the guidance of Jerry/Merl, so it was natural when he and Michael Hinton started Keystone Revisited. The group plays the music that Jerry/Merl played and has added flavor to the music while not getting away from its beginning. The current lineup features Scott Gubermann, who has played with Phil Lesh, Larry Vann, who played with Jerry and Merl, Tony, and the band take you on a magical ride, and if you close your eyes, you can see Jerry and Merl smiling down from heaven.
